A New Concept in Independent Living

How to Get Fit at Prime

(With a Little Help From Servant Rehab)

Question: Where can you belly dance on Monday, balance on Tuesday, strengthen your heart on Wednesday, run some circuits on Thursday and move to music on Friday?

Answer: Prime West Knoxville! (And if you’re wondering about the weekends, we run a women’s fitness class on Saturday and take a well-earned breather on Sunday.)

As you can gather, we’re very proud of our fitness program. We want to help residents become fitter and healthier than they were before entering the community — and just as importantly, to have lots of fun while doing it. After all, you don’t have to train for a marathon to get fit. In fact, if you join our Sittercise program, you don’t even have to stand up!

One reason we can deliver a first-rate fitness program is because we partner with first-rate therapy providers. One of them is Servant Rehab, with over 20 years experience providing physical, speech and occupational therapy to seniors across the Southeast. We spoke to Servant Rehab’s owner, Damien Luce, to find out what makes his company special and how his team can help Prime residents reach their health and fitness goals.

What differentiates Servant Rehab from other fitness providers for older adults?

In short, our purpose. Our company is founded on the belief that we are here to serve our patients, partners and staff. We also have a leadership team that has worked in and for the senior living industry. We understand the challenges the industry faces and how outpatient therapy programs can meet urgent needs.

What do you offer at Prime West Knoxville?

You’ll find us at the community every day, helping seniors stay as active and independent as they can. We offer physical, occupational and speech therapy and our fitness program includes two classes a week: one focusing on cardio and the other on strength. We also help residents work independently on their fitness goals by helping them create their own workout programs.

Can you tell us about your personal journey in fitness and physical therapy?

I have wanted to be a physical therapist since I was a high school junior. I had three surgeries after hurting my knee playing football, but a physical therapist was able to get me fit and ready for the next season. After obtaining my Master’s in physical therapy, I worked with everyone from high school students to professional athletes. That helped me develop Servant Rehab’s philosophy of offering sports medicine for seniors as well as more traditional therapies.

What are your top 3 tips for older adults who want to improve their strength and fitness?

  • One of our favorite sayings is, “If you don’t move it, you’ll lose it.” So stay active and keep participating in activities!
  • Another of our sayings is, “If it hurts, don’t do it.” Many injuries that we see are repetitive overuse injuries that could have been avoided. If something hurts, please come by for a free screening so that we can help point you in the right direction.
  • Stay hydrated! This is very important as we move into the warmer seasons. As people go out more, they tend to drink less.

Thanks for your advice and insights, Damien! If you're interested in joining a community that partners with industry-leading therapy providers like Servant Rehab, contact Prime today or sign up for one of our upcoming events.
