Employee Spotlight: Debbie Vinsant is Curating Fun and Fulfilling Activities for Prime Seniors

Prime West Knoxville’s new Activity Manager, Debbie Vinsant, knows how important it is to seek out fulfilling and fun pursuits in lifeespecially for seniors in an independent living community. Over the years, she has cultivated an impressive range of skills and hobbies, ranging from repurposing old possessions and hooking up car stereo systems, to writing for magazines, and building careers in business, law, and education.

However, it was a devastating family tragedy, 15 years ago, that led the mother-of-two to find her calling working with senior communities.

“I lost my third child to a congenital heart defect when I was seven-and-a-half months pregnant,” she says. “The experience made me reevaluate things and I decided I wanted to do something where I could make a difference.”

It was her husband, Randy, who spotted her next vocation. He saw an advert in the local paper for an activities director at a nursing home and told her to apply. Vinsant doubted she had the right credentials, but she got the job. Her love of people, artistic skills, and enthusiasm for learning shined through to land her the role.

Dedicated to Creating Memorable Senior Living Experiences in West Knoxville

Since then, Vinsant has learned on the job, discovering firsthand how crafts and enriching activities can aid seniors with many aspects of their wellbeing, including helping them reach goals in their mental and physical health. After many years of working in the assisted living field, she is excited to make her mark at Prime West Knoxville’s independent living community.

“I have been so privileged to meet and work with many seniors,” she adds. “I love their zest for life, their advice, and the fact that a lot of people underestimate them. I love being part of making plans and following dreams in this new chapter of their life story.”

While the Prime team at West Knoxville’s newest retirement community eagerly awaits the arrival of their residents, Vinsant has been planning a fun calendar of eclectic activities.

“We’ll be doing art classes, fired ink painting, home decor, stained glass, sculpting, concrete, and terracotta work,” she lists. “We’ll make things for the holidays and go thrifting so we can breathe new life into old objects.”

Taking the Fun on the Road at Prime

Vinsant also has a host of interesting outings up her sleeve. Trips in the pipeline include the historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary and the quaint town of Helen, GA, plus a bicycle excursion down the Creeper Trail in VA. Locally, she’ll organize for residents to go hiking and explore the locations of Prime’s first book club read, ‘Legends and Lore of East Tennessee’.

“I’m planning axe-throwing and six courses in six weeks for our golfers,” she adds. “Mostly, I will be inspired by people. I am looking forward to building a social calendar around the residents of Prime West Knoxville. I really just love to help people live their lives, have fun, and not give up on life. I’ve heard people say, ‘I can’t do that, I am too old’. Not true! We can make that happen for you!”
