4 Ways to Celebrate Grandparents Day

Ideas for how to make their day “grand”

Since 1978, Americans have celebrated Grandparents Day on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day earlier in the year, it’s a special day to honor some of the people who mean the most to you, whether they're your grandparents, your kids’ grandparents, or if they’re just like a grandparent to you.

With Grandparents Day 2022 just a week away, we’ve compiled a list of ideas for celebrating your favorite older adults on Grandparents Day (or any other day of the year):

1. Find a special gift they can cherish

There’s nothing quite like seeing someone react to a gift picked out especially for them. Maybe your grandparents are in need of a new appliance (air fryers make easy work of dinnertime), or maybe you want to treat them to a special experience (think: theater performances, golf gift card). You can go as big as you want to go.

For most of us, though, simple and homemade gifts are just as special – if not more so. Get some of your favorite photos printed and put them together in a photo album or a scrapbook. If you have little ones, there are plenty of craft ideas that you help them bring to life. You can even show off your creativity by creating homemade greeting cards.

2. Plan a day trip together

Everyone needs a change of scenery every once in a while. Why not stop by your grandparents’ place to pick them up and hit the road? You can visit local museums or attractions together, or drive a little farther out to explore your nearest national park.

Not in the mood to do touristy things? There’s a reason why people say that the journey is often better than the destination. Spending the afternoon on a leisurely Sunday drive gives you the chance to chat and enjoy each other’s company. You can ride by old familiar locations or just enjoy the scenery and some good tunes together.

3. Try a hobby or activity together

We often think of grandparents as a source of wisdom. You can use Grandparents Day as a fun way to take advantage of that. Invite your grandpa to go on a fishing trip, where he can show you all of his tricks for reeling in big catches. If there are family recipes that you’d like to learn, step into the kitchen along with your grandma and cook them together. Maybe your grandparents have picked up a fun sport like pickleball that they could teach you to play. Whatever your loved ones are passionate about, ask them to share it.

4. Schedule some quality time

This probably seems like a no-brainer, but sometimes the best thing you can do to show someone you care is to spend more time together. We all have busy schedules, but taking time to visit your grandparents is a simple gesture that can say a lot. Ask what they’ve been doing to keep busy lately. If they’re a Prime West Knoxville resident, chances are, they have plenty of exciting activities to tell you about.

Likewise, bring your grandparents up to speed on the things going on in your life. If you’re visiting your parents with your kids, encourage them to share what they’ve been learning in school or what kinds of extra-curricular activities they’re involved in. It might not seem like much to them, but their grandparents will be thrilled to hear even the minor tidbits about their lives.

If distance is an issue, consider getting them a digital photo frame – you can upload to it regularly and the photos appear instantly. Helping them set up Skype or Zoom is a great option for regular calls and check-ins, too.

No matter how you spend the day together, just make sure the grandparents in your life know how much they’re loved and appreciated.
